A murder mystery is the perfect Christmas party game: everyone dresses up, the lights go low, and by dessert your quietest cousin is accusing your uncle of murder. Here's how to host one without spending a week on prep.
1. Pick a cosy setting
Christmas mysteries work best when everyone is "trapped" together: a snowed-in lodge, a country house on Christmas Eve, a train stuck in a blizzard. Being snowed in explains why nobody can leave, and why the killer must be one of the guests.
2. Invite 6 to 8 people
That's the sweet spot. Fewer and there aren't enough suspects; more and quieter guests get lost.
- 5 people? The host plays a character too.
- More than 8? Let couples share one character. They scheme together, which is half the fun.
- Office party? Play in teams of two or three per character.
3. Give everyone a costume hint
Not a full costume, just one thing: a red velvet jumper, a chef's apron, a stethoscope, an ugly Christmas sweater. When everyone walks in as someone, the game starts on its own.
4. Use the blackout trick
The best Christmas mysteries have a moment where the lights go out. Turn the lights off for round three and play by candlelight or fairy lights. It's the single biggest atmosphere upgrade, and it costs nothing.
5. Play in three rounds
- Introductions: everyone introduces their character and their (claimed) whereabouts.
- First clues: the host reads the cause of death and the first evidence.
- The blackout: alibis crack, someone's caught lying, and a final clue changes everything.
Then everyone writes down who did it, and how. Then the reveal.
6. Hide a physical clue
A snow globe on a side table. A wrapped gift box labelled "open at breakfast". Small props that match the story make guests feel like detectives.
7. Food that works
Finger food beats a sit-down dinner: people move around, whisper and form alliances. Mulled wine, mince pies and a cheese board are plenty.
The no-prep option
If you'd rather not write a mystery yourself, Murder at Frostholm Lodge is a ready-made one built exactly like this. It's Christmas Eve at a snowed-in lodge, the storm cuts the power, and the host is found dead in his study. Every guest opens their secret character on their own phone, the host gets a step-by-step guide with evidence cards, and the solution stays locked until the votes are in, so the host can play too.
Whatever you choose, the secret is the same: give every guest one juicy secret and a reason to lie about it. Merry Christmas, and trust no one.
